Opportunities Abound
As a young scholar, hopelessly in love with the sweet pursuit of philosophy, have you ever wondered what it would be like to attend a nationally recognized institution, ripe with chances for you to enrich your studies? Wait a minute – you do! Take, for instance, the 2008 Spindel Conference hosted this year by Memphis’ own Professor Lawson. Themed on “Race, Racism, and Liberalism in the 21st Century,” the conference will feature a select group of distinguished scholars of African American philosophy, race theory, and feminist theory to open a discussion on pressing issues with the future of race talk and racism. Don’t miss it. The Spindel Conference is scheduled for September 25-27. For more information, please visit the Philosophy Department’s website at cas.memphis.edu/philosophy/.

Poised to Strike
The Philosophy Circle’s plans to launch a reading group are approaching payday. In case you missed it, last month the Circle announced its intentions and called for all interested students to get in touch. The masses (read: a respectable handful) have answered, but it’s not too late! In fact, because the Circle has planned to organize the group on a rolling reading schedule, it may technically never be too late. Don’t let the lack of pressure stop you, though. If you’re interested please email us at philosophy.circle@gmail.com.

Officer Openings
Running The Circle can be a demanding affair, requiring the dedication and commitment of many talented students. But it is also an esteemed privilege, affording undergrads the opportunity to organize events and build personal relationships with faculty members as well as the greater philosophy community. If you dare, we encourage you to apply for this opportunity by visiting our website below and clicking the “Officers” link at the top.

Hey guys,

I finished graduate work at UofM back in Spring 07 and having been teaching in the Philly area ever since. Anyone still around that I may know? Phil? I'm glad to see that undergraduates are talking philosophy seriously...I like the new site as well. Enjoy the Spindel this year.

Best,
Mark W. Westmoreland
